Romans 12:18 (ESV) – “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”
In the African American Baptist tradition, we know that unity in the body of Christ is both our heritage and our calling. Paul’s words remind us that peace is not always automatic—it requires effort, humility, and a willingness to let Christ’s Spirit rule our hearts. To “live peaceably” means to choose love over strife, forgiveness over grudges, and patience over anger. When we get along with others, we reflect the reconciling work of Jesus, who broke down walls of hostility and made us one family in God.
This teaching challenges us in our daily walk. There will be misunderstandings, differences of opinion, and times when we feel wronged. Yet, Scripture says, “as far as it depends on you.” That means each of us has the responsibility to be a peacemaker, to extend grace, and to seek reconciliation. In a world filled with division, the church must be a witness of what godly relationships look like—rooted in Christ, strengthened by love, and sustained by the Spirit.
“Unity is strength, but peace is the bond that makes unity possible.”
“As far as it depends on you, choose peace and show Christ’s love in every relationship.”
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us into Your family through Christ Jesus. Help us to live in peace with our brothers and sisters, showing love, patience, and forgiveness. Teach us to be peacemakers in our homes, our churches, and our communities. May our witness draw others to the unity and hope that are found in You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
