Scripture Reading
The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.” So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” - Exodus 17:8-16

How Should We Think About the Bible as History? Fr. Stephen Freeman - Clarion: Journal of Spirituality and Justice

Meditation

We all have moments when the enemy attacks. We all experience moments of weakness and weariness as well. But the message of the text is that even in those moments of battle and fatigue, we can be victorious if we remember to do our part while in the fight of faith. We need to be a part of the Christian fellowship.

Joshua was in the middle of the battle below, while Moses stood on the mountain above. Both played a crucial role in the battle. In fact, were it not for Aaron and Hur the battle would have been lost. Their job was to simply support Moses and his leadership. By helping Moses keep his hands up with the staff, which  brought victory to Joshua in the battle below.

We may not think much of our roles in the kingdom of God, but we should remember that each person is important to the mission itself. Leaders are only as effective as their support team. It takes each person doing his/her part for the ministry to be effective.

Resist the temptations of ego, fame, power, and position. Instead commit yourself to supporting your spiritual leaders and rededicate yourself to the assignment God has given you. Serve with a made up mind for the glory of God and most importantly "Do your part."

Prayer

Lord, I admit that there are times when I feel overlooked and under appreciated. Help me overcome those negative feelings and replace them with the joy that comes from serving you. Let me serve and support spiritual leadership to the best of my ability. Keep me focused on my ministry assignment and work. I love you and need you in all that I do. Lord, gently remind me that I'm a part of something bigger than me. In Jesus name, Amen
