6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. 7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
8 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’” - Luke 13:6-9
God's Blessings In The New Year
This parable in Luke's Gospel is a favorite reading of mine at this time of the year. There is something about coming to the end of a calendar year that signals to us a shift in focus. Usually it's a time of self examination, goal setting and fulfilling responsiblities put off for too long.
The Luke text however, reminds us about the value and fleeting nature of time and opportunity. It also reminds us that our life should be characterized as "fruitful". In addition to this, and probably more important to me, is the message of grace and mercy when our life has been less than "fruitful".
The part where the gardener/steward of the vineyard says to the owner,‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it.' Another chance, another opportunity to embrace God's vision for our life , operate in our gifts and faithfully get closer to God. Another Year.
Perhaps instead of deep evaluation or lofty resolutions/goals. Let us be grateful, thankful, prayerful, and worshipful in considering that God has allowed us to see 2022.
The Covid-19 virius in an ongoing context that we live in. Be encourged and responsible in living, laughing and loving in the midst of this pandemic. May God allow "fruitfullness" to overflow in your life!
