"Let us go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so.”
— Hebrews 6:1-3 (NIV)
As Christians, we are called to grow and mature in our faith, deepening our relationship with God beyond the basics of salvation. The writer of Hebrews encourages us to "go on to maturity," which means that our walk with God should be marked by continuous growth, understanding, and transformation. While salvation through Jesus is the foundation of our faith, there is so much more God wants to teach us and mold in us. God desires that we mature, grow and develop.
Maturity in our walk (lifestyle) with God involves three activities:
1. Ongoing Repentance and Faith- As we mature, we grow in understanding how to live out our repentance and faith in more profound and personal ways. Repentance isn’t a one-time event but a continual turning away from sin as we recognize God's holiness. We seek to please God in our actions and attitude.
2. Spiritual Disciplines - Growth involves engaging in practices like prayer, reading Scripture, fellowship, and worship that nurture our souls. These disciplines help us become more like Christ and strengthen our relationship with Him. You cannot "grow up" and be a stronger Christian while avoiding or neglecting prayer, bible study and worship.
3. Embracing God’s Purposes - A mature believer understands that life’s challenges and trials are opportunities for growth and for God to refine us. We begin to see everything through the lens of God’s eternal plan. Maturity means recognizing that God's purpose always prevails.
As you reflect today, ask yourself: Are you content with staying where you are spiritually, or are you willing to press on into deeper intimacy with God? Maturity in Christ requires effort and a willing heart, but it is a journey that bears abundant fruit. Let's begin the year by committing ourselves to do better and be better believers in Christ.
Prayer:
Lord, I love You and I'm asking you to help me grow in my faith. I want to move beyond the elementary teachings and press into a deeper relationship with You. Teach me to walk in obedience, to trust in Your will, to use my tongue wisely and to reflect Your character in all I do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
