After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. - Matthew 2:9-12 NIV

Today as we enjoy fellowship and food with family, let us remember that our celebration should center itself on Jesus Christ. We are all blessed and fortunate to have family, friends and food in light of the economic uncertainty of the day. There are people who have no home, or family and may even view themselves as friendless. There are people who have no warm place to go and no hot meal to enjoy. Perhaps on this festive occasion, we should not forget others and even commit ourselves to serving others and working for justice and fairness in the world today.

 

Christmas invites us to consider the amazing love that God has for us. The fact that God comes to us in spite of evil and oppressive regimes in the world. The context of his first coming on that first Christmas, was one of imperialism, discrimination, oppression, economic disparity , violence, genocide and spiritual darkness.

 

Yet, Jesus came to us. The babe wrapped in swaddling clothes. Emmanuel, God with us! The Word became flesh and dwelt among us! We celebrate Jesus today and we re dedicate ourselves to serving Him through evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and worship.

 

  • Christmas invites us to come to Jesus. To give ourselves fully and completely to Him.
  • Christmas invites us to worship Jesus. He alone is King of Kings and is worthy of true worship.
  • Christmas invites us to change. To live differently. To love and not hate. To repent and be redeemed.

 

May you enjoy this day. Let the Joy of the Lord be your strength today. Reflect, remember and rejoice!
