1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
We're all familiar with the phrase, "Ready, set, go!" Those are the instructions given at the start of an activity, competition or race. In Paul's letter to believers at Corinth, he uses the image of runners racing to instruct and inspire them towards self-discipline and perseverance. We all need that encouragement. Sometimes the race of life becomes difficult and we feel overwhelmed.
It is said that the phrase is full of meaning, “ready” means prepare yourself, “set” means to position yourself, and “go” means to start moving. Every Christian prepares for the race of life by surrendering to Jesus, accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior. We get "set" or in position through the practice of the spiritual disciplines , like prayer, fasting and bible study. Finally , we "go" by putting our faith into action. By living out the word one day at a time. By loving others as we love ourselves.
Life is fragile. Time is fleeting. We must be about our Father's business. So run the race with all you have knowing that God will reward your faithfulness!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Help me to run the race of life set before me with joy and purpose. May my eyes be focused on You and my heart filled with compassion for others. I love you God and my life is incomplete without You. Thank you for saving me and inviting me to be a part of Your mission. In Jesus name, Amen.
