Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” - Genesis 32:26-28 NIV
The story of the patriarch Jacob is a familiar story for many students of scripture. The incidents of trickery, favoritism and betrayal are meant to remind us of our own fragility and duplicity. We too are "born into sin and shaped in iniquity" as Psalm 51 would suggest. But our sinful nature can be overcome through the power of God at work in our life.
If we surrender ourselves to God.
The new year invites us to change. But we must stop running from our past. The new beginning starts with alone time with God. Blocking out the distractions of life so as to hear from heaven. We experience transformation through suffering and challenge, so don't be afraid to face life's challenges.
And most importantly, never give up! Hold on to your faith. New Beginnings are always possible with God.
