Overcoming Hate with Love

In one of his most famous sermons, Loving Your Enemies, Rev. Dr. Martin L King, Jr.  preached: “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

 

Proverbs 10:12 ESV
Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.

 

Today you are encouraged to choose love over hate. It’s a choice that each one of us is presented every day. Our world is becoming increasingly violent. We understand this to be in part fulfilment of scripture.

 

2 Timothy 3:1-7 states:
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

 

 

However, each one of us has a responsibility in making the world a better place and our communities safe, by starting with loving one another. If we aren’t careful, it can become quite easy to be hateful towards others. Hate is defined as an angry or resentful emotional response to certain people or ideas. It is the root cause of much of the violence in our communities. Our attitude and our words can be powerful tools of strife or unity, the choice is yours.


I encourage you to choose love.
