A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord[a]; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” - Isaiah 40:3-5 NIV

Advent: A New Beginning

The second Sunday of Advent is a time of anticipation and celebration of the coming of Christ into the world. The Incarnation or the Word that became flesh. Advent is also the hope for God to come again to redeem God’s people. The hope of Advent stems from the fact that when God comes, things will be changed forever. The status quo will be no more, and violence and injustice will be vanquished for eternity.   God comes to make all things right and as we wait in expectation, we wait for God to pave a highway in the wilderness, a smooth path to replace the rough and rocky roads of this life.

In Advent, the beginning of the liturgical year, we yearn for a new beginning in our broken lives, knowing that when God comes, we will be made joyfully whole. No matter what we may experience at whatever time in our life, we can be assured that God is in the midst of it all and that new beginnings are possible.

When you wake up each morning do not begin with the old, start with the new. We cannot find victory by dwelling on the pain of the past. We cannot receive new life while rehearsing over and over again, the hurtful and disappointing experiences of our past. A new day must begin. A new start. A new life is possible.

Isaiah 40:31 says, "but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

Prayer

Heavenly Father, forgive me for embracing bitterness and expecting blessings. I want to be free. Lead me each day, to start afresh with hope in you alone. I give you my pain and my disappointments , I cannot live and hold on to them at the same time. Give me , O God a renewed hope and new joy. I will worship you forever. I love you and I'm determined to stay close to you. In Jesus name, Amen.
