A House Divided Against Itself - Matthew 12:25

But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. - Matthew 12:25

The context in which these words were offered by Jesus was in response to an accusation against Jesus by the Pharisees suggesting that his ability to cast out demons was essentially, because he was filled with demons. This was blasphemy. And Jesus made it clear that a kingdom that is at cross-purposes with itself will fall. Any household filled with infighting will tear itself apart.

Our nation finds itself deeply divided as is evidenced by our presidential election on Tuesday, Nov 3, 2020. Our rhetoric, attitude and actions create discord and disharmony within our American household. We have chosen to reject and demonize our differences instead of respecting them and understanding them as an asset and not a liability.

The Christian community is no different. We should not take our cues from the world. Instead we should be the "salt" and "light" that helps the world see that unity is priceless. We should work for justice and unity; do the things that make for unity and guard it with our prayers.

Today each one  of us should consider our actions, attitude and affections. Am I sowing seeds of discord, disruption, and division? or Am I working and witnessing  to promote unity in both the church and the community. Its never too late to change. Our world and the church needs unity.

It matters to God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we ask that you fill us with your Spirit of love and unity among believers all across this nation.

We ask for your help to set aside our differences and look to the greater cause, the cause of Christ. We ask that you would help us to truly live a life of love. We know that this is only possible through the power of your Spirit, so we pray for your Spirit to move across our land in fresh ways. Turn your people back to you. Draw others to come to know you. Thank you that you are always with us to give us great purpose and hope.

We pray for our families, for every relationship most dear to us, that you would guard our time, and our lives together. We ask for your ability to quickly forgive hurts, for a renewed heart of compassion, for love and faithfulness to be evident in every decision and action.

We cannot do this without You, O God. Have mercy upon us and help us. In Jesus name, Amen
