Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy. - Proverbs 27:6

Today, I'm preparing to attend the farewell service of a colleague who recently passed and I've been thinking about how complex relationships can be. Especially those within the household of faith. Christians are notorious for viewing true friends as those who agree with you on everything, never disappoint you and never hurt you. Unfortunately that is a weak and wrong understanding of true genuine relationships.

Relationships are organic. They grow and develop over time. They also include ups and downs, highs and lows, good and bad times, disagreement and disappointments. But in the end, the true relationships endure.

I've learned that when it comes to relationships the place to start is with me. What are my expectations? What attitude am I demonstrating? What are my actions communicating? Am I relying on the Lord for leadership of my life? How can I become a better person and friend?

Here are two principles to begin with: (...and continue with for the rest of your life)

Realistic expectations
Inherent in the gospel is that all of us are sinners and fall short of the glory of God. Christian friends should never be surprised when we sin against each other. The hurt is real and reconciliation takes work.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

Framework for forgiveness
Christian friends have a model for true forgiveness in Jesus Christ. And they have already experienced the greatest forgiveness possible—the costly pardon of God the Father made possible in his Son.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also forgive. (Colossians 3:12-13)

The bottom line is that we need true relationships with friends and family members. Relationship involve work and great reward. We have not been created to function in isolation. Never Give Up.

Heavenly Father, You pick me up each and every time I have fallen by the wayside. You have never failed me and I am assured that You won’t start now. Your undying, never-failing, never-ending love drives me to become a better person, pushes me to want to become one with You.

Lord, please bring the right people into my life, who would motivate me to become closer to You and remove the wrong ones that pull me away.

Strengthen my present friendships so that they will be based on You and Your word.

Renew the past friendships that have died, and let me be an example, leading my friends to the Lord. In Your Holy, Precious name I pray, Amen.
