In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 5:16
I'm watching the news this morning and it seems as though every report contains "Bad News". Yet in the midst of this newscast, I'm powerfully impacted by the newscaster who insist on smiling and looking for the "bright side" in her news stories. I'm reminded of how important our perspective and purpose is, in spite of our problems.
The Matthew 5:16 text seems almost unrealistic when contrasted with our current social/political climate in the world. But, the more I think about it, this is what God expects of me. He saved me to be HIs Light in the world.
Listen at the Message bible translation of the same text, "
“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:14-16 MSG
I think that says it all. As you continue to live in a COVID-19 context and more, make sure your light is on and shining brightly! We have that light shining through our lives if our actions reflect the nature of Christ—His love, compassion, and forgiveness. His light shines through our attitudes, words, and deeds.
The German philosopher Nietzsche once said that if he saw more redeemed people he might be more inclined to believe in their Redeemer.
Prayer
Lord, I love you and praise you for who you are and what you've done in and for me! Thank you for inviting me to be a blessing to my world, a light in a dark world, bringing blessings, illumination and meaning to the lives of those I come in contact with through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Lord let my light shine so brightly that your glory will be revealed in, and through me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
