Dealing with Disappointment

Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.

Psalm 119:116

We've all faced disappointment. It is an inevitable human experience. But it need not have dominion over your life. I'm convinced that disappointment is grounded in the unmet expectations of someone or something in our life. Maybe we need to place more expectation and confidence in God than we do in ourselves and those around us. We really should look to God more than we do our possessions, positions and power.

The psalmist teaches us a two important truths:

1. Our strength is insufficient.  We need God more than God needs us! The various translations use different words to express this truth. " Sustain me, support me, help me, give me, uphold me, stablish me and help me." Its clear in the prayer of the psalmist that we need to call out to God for support and strength. We need to look to God and not ourselves.

2. God's Word is our Anchor. Life is filled with storms. In fact, storms keep coming. This year has been filled with many challenges. But the psalmist says , according to your promise, according to your word, according to your promises. You see we overcome disappointment when we read His word and are reminded of His promises. Then we begin to truly live.

Lord, Thank You for working in my life, even in ways that look like failure. Help me keep my eyes on You and not on my situation. Help me trust You more, especially when I face what looks like disappointment. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
