For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed - 2 Corinthians 4:6-9

I'm thinking today about how temporary things really are and how we easily take for granted people, positions and possessions. We assume that things will last forever and our action and attitude often indicate that we think ourselves to be indispensable. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Life is fragile and every moment is fleeting.

Paul's correspondence to believers in the city of Corinth is in fact God's message to all of us today. We are like jars of clay. Clay jars were containers made from raw clay, shaped and molded then baked until it was hard. The clay jars were then painted, glazed, and decorated. The clay jars were beautiful, but they had one thing in common: they were breakable. Whatever was inside could not be contained there forever.

We are like clay jars, not made to last forever. But the treasure that God has put inside of us is priceless and meant to serve as a powerful witness to God's glory and goodness! In fact the New living translation sets it down this way, "We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.

Whatever you face today, face it with a quiet, calm confidence in your Creator who chose to deposit in you a priceless gift. Use it to God's glory. But always remember its not about you...

Prayer

Holy Father, from whom all blessings flow. We give your name reverence, respect and worship. We confess our sin to you and we seek to give you glory in all that we do and say. Truly God, may it always be less of me and more of Thee. Let your light shine in us! We need your grace and your mercy! Thank you for gifting us and help us to use the gift for Your Glory. In Jesus name, Amen
