“Even now,” declares the Lord,“return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing—grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God. - Joel 2:12-14

There is a sense in which during a national crisis, political, economic or health that the Christian church tends to embrace its "judgement" rhetoric and its Doctrine of Sin. It is unfortunate that the Doctrine of sin and the hoped for response of repentance is limited to occasional proclamation during tragedy or crisis instead of finding its place at the heart of the Gospel message to the world. There is no Good News apart from an understanding that we are sinners and we need a Savior.

Our worship, preaching and music often reflects our theology. The Christian Church in America may be more interested in "benefits" and "blessings", than we are in self examination and service to others. During this Lent season , which almost seems to be lost in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, we may want to hear with open ears the Word of the Lord from Joel.

“Even now,” declares the Lord,“return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” v12

The stage is set for a worldwide return to the Lord, not with rituals and rhetoric , but with sincere hearts. The time has always been available for a return to the Lord. It seems however, that pain has a way of getting our attention. Joel invites us  to react not with despair but with faith. "Even now", He says as way of reminding us that God is ready to heal us.

No show of piety is needed. No tearing of the garment as a show of remorse. This brief text segment invites us to experience a brokenness of heart, so as to sincerely see God as He really is and to see ourselves as we really are...Sinners who need a Savior.

In this time of uncertainty, may we all return to the Lord and experience a renewed faith in our Creator and Savior

Even now....
