But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. - Isaiah 43:1-2

The pandemic called Coronavirus continues its devastation throughout the world. In some parts of the world the death toll is staggering and in other parts of the world the virus is almost viewed as more of an inconvenience than a life threatening disease. But we have been knocked off our feet by its ferocious nature and its impact on both families and finances. It is a time of uncertainty. Uncertainty often brings with it Fear. The fear of the unknown, the fear of failure, and the fear of death.

The context of the Isaiah text is exile. A nation who feels forsaken and overwhelmed by their circumstances almost overcome by both disobedience and distance God. In a few words the text provides us in the 21st century a foundation of faith grounded in the who God is and what God has promised.

God has created, formed, redeemed and invited Israel to be His people and His possession. A gentle reminder to us all ...we belong to God.

Coupled with this description of God is an exhortation to be filled with faith. "Do not fear". No where in the text is it suggested that times will not be tough or problems overwhelming or days long. But it does say, "I will be with You'. Waters, rivers, fire, flames...wont destroy us or consume us. We are His.

We do not know what is ahead of us as we grapple with this virus in the world, but we can say with certainty ...God is with us. And when you really think about it, that all that really matters.

Come Lord Jesus, and see about your people. Come Lord with Mercy and Grace. Come O Redeemer and Savior. Free us and Fill us with your spirit. Grow us and Go with us every step of the way. Savior Lead us. In Jesus name, Amen
