“Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and He relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing — grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God. - Joel 2:12-14

Christian believers  around the world and in many different denominations observe the liturgical season of Lent. It invites believers to participate in the spiritual disciplines of the faith with a renewed sense of commitment and sincerity.

Lent is based off of Jesus’ time in the desert, in which for 40 days He fasted and prayed and was tempted by the devil before angels came and tended to Him. It falls between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday and is a period of 40 days (not including Sundays) wherein believers are moved to give up something as an act of spiritual worship and devotion.

We should be mindful during this time, that the focus of our activities is on the sacrificial love of our Savior Jesus Christ. The season invites us to take a deep look at ourselves and consider how we might grow deeper in our commitment to Christ. This is a time to fast, give and pray. This is a time for humility and sacrifice. We should seek to engage in these spiritual disciplines all the time, but an honest self evaluation will reveal that we have been inconsistent in so many ways. Lent is that moment to experience renewal and kind of spiritual detox by relinquishing those pleasures that often take us away from God. Make the sacrifice...

Make a personal commitment to take an inward look and invite God to renew and restore your spirit. It is always for His glory and not our own.
