Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. - 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV

It is quite easy to simply recite the 1 Thessalonian 5:18 text with little thought to the enormous challenge it presents to people wounded and weary from the vicissitudes of life. How do we give thanks when we are wounded? How do we give thanks when deep within us lies a grudge against , dare we admit, Heaven itself? Many of us have experienced moments when our anger was directed toward the One who created us. Why me? Why does God allow me to suffer?

A grudge is defined as a persistent feeling of ill will or resentment resulting from a past insult or injury. Like Job we declare, "Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments." Job 23:3-4 We suffer and we hurt and we are wounded at times. But the text invites us to consider not what God has done for us  or even what God may be doing for us in our painful place, but rather , Who God is.

Gratitude is more powerful and productive than holding a Grudge. Letting go of resentful emotions that lead us down dark and desolated pathways, can provide us with the healing that we truly need.

This invitation to thanksgiving is grounded not in what we have, but in Who we know. Our Heavenly Father gives us more than stuff. Our healing, hope, forgiveness, faith, strength and our very salvation are all gifts from God.

Let us be grateful for God's mercy, and love and grace. Let us give thanks  unto God in all circumstances. And I believe that healing, relief and restoration will come.

Be Grateful and Be Well.
