Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. - Matthew 21:19

Nothing But Leaves

It was on this day that resistance and rebellion were on display. Attempts to discredit Jesus were launched by those in religious power. Temple leadership conspired to trick Jesus into blasphemy. Although the crowds seemed loyal in their praise and crude coronation, it was to be short lived.

It becomes painfully obvious that those in the old city simply don't understand...or refuse to understand. So in seeing a fig tree covered in leaves, Jesus reminds us of our need to be productive and purposeful in our living. You see though the tree was filled with leaves, there were no fruit. The tree promised what it could not...or would not deliver..fruit. It's purpose was to bear fruit.

Our life is to be marked by productivity and purpose found only in a right relationship with Jesus .

Jesus pronounced judgement on the tree reminding us of our accountability to the One who would die for us.

May we contemplate our response to God's blessings upon us as we remember the week of Passion. And may we each ask ourselves the question,  "Or we in resistance and rebellion?"

Let us walk in God's purpose. #HolyWeek2019
