God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea." Psalm 46: 1-2

Today in the United States of America countless individuals remember and reflect upon the horror and violence of September 11, 2001. It was on that day, thousands of people were killed by the violent terrorism of an Islamic group known as "al-Qaeda". Each one of us today, who were old enough to remember 9/11, should, if but for a moment , pause to remember the innocent people who lost their life unaware that September 9, 2001 would be their last day on the planet.

It is easy to be political or philosophical about 9/11, if you were not directly impacted by the fall of those twin towers in New York. But for those who lost fathers, mothers, children and friends...terrorism and violence are more than political talking points.

Almost two decades later, violence in america is becoming all too commonplace, stoked by reckless rhetoric and unjustice policies and civil practices. We live in a chaotic culture.

But let us remember where refuge can be found and where strength can be received. Not in statehouses, or judicial halls or legislative assemblies, But in the Lord. The Lord, Strong and Mighty! Psalm 46 communicates a message of hope and endurance that will never become stale or out of touch with reality. No matter who you are... trouble and fear and danger will become a part of your context.

But the Good News of the Christian faith is that we have a "present help" in God. In God we experience safety, refuge, strength, hope , restoration and ultimately salvation.

May God give peace and comfort to those who lost loved ones in 9/11.
