And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. - Nehemiah 8:1-3 ESV

The sobering truth is that we often neglect spending quality time with God through the reading of His word. TheBible's treasure of inspiration and encouragement, not to mention spiritual development, often goes without use because we have failed to commit ourselves fully to the message of God's word.

The Nehemiah text presents a remarkable story of restoration and revival for the people of Jerusalem upon return from exile. But beyond the construction of the walls to protect the city, is the discovery and reading of God's word to the people that eventually constructs a solid faith within the community.

Responding to God's word means:

1. Reading it becuse it is essential for life.

2. Reverencing it because it is Holy.

3. Repenting and Rejoicing because it is true.

After reading Nehemiah 8, one can see people who have an appetite for God's word, people who demonstrate reverence for the word as it is read and received, and people who are convicted in hearing it and motivated to rejoice in its ultimate victory.

Be encouraged to return to God's word on a daily basis. Set a time each day for devotional readings. And pray for your church and community that God's word would become the most important resource for daily living.
