Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’ “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’” - Luke 13:6-8

We all have a need for mercy and grace and second chances. Here is a text that reminds us of what we don't want to be reminded of; that we are not always productive or faithful. Yet instead of condemning us to death, God in Christ has chosen to redeem us instead.

God has chosen to "work with us" or to "work in us" so as to fulfill His purpose and plan for us. In our practice of the spiritual disciplines, may we respond to God's grace with fervent prayer and faithful ministry to others.

He looked beyond our faults and saw our need.
