Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. - Luke 12:1-3 NIV

A sobering word from our Savior reminding us to pursue sincerity in both attitude and actions. The season of Lent invites us to look within ourselves and examine those areas in our life that need attention. It also invites us to embrace our mortality and to seek ways to serve others in the way Christ served humanity. We then pray, fast and serve in remembrance and reflection on the ministry of Jesus. But in this text we are warned to "Be on guard". That is to be careful that we do not place more emphasis on our Lenten activities than our inner motives.

The "yeast of the Pharisees" in the text speaks of hypocrisy. It is the temptation inherent in institutional  religion to play the role of being religious instead of truly seeking relationship with God. It is the act of covering up or pretending to be what we are not. It is to look religious and talk religious Jesus offers to us sobering words, "There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed" His words imply that God already knows, hears and sees us for who we really are.

We are invited to pursue authenticity. May our talk and walk find unity and our witness to the world point to Jesus.
