Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. - Luke 2:41-42 (KJV)

The 40 day experience of Lent provides not only moments of meditation and reminders of our mortality, it also reinforces our sense of mission. Why are we here and What are our responsibilities to God and others?

There is very little information concerning the childhood of Jesus within the record of scripture. But we do have this odd, but important footnote within the Gospel of Luke. We are told that the parents of Jesus are devoted and committed to the faithful practice of their religion as individuals and as a family. We're tempted to gloss over this fact in the text and move on to the rest of the story concerning the 12 year old Jesus. But perhaps we can meditate on these lines in the text and then look within ourselves as it relates to our commitment to faith and family.

Luke says they made this journey every year and they took along with them, their son Jesus. If you are a parent the text challenges us to live out our faith with our children and spouse. If you are not a parent, the text invites you to pray with and for families, that their faith might be strengthen. Each generation depends on the previous generation for a sense of mission and meaning in life.

May we all demonstrate our faith within our families and communities, The next generation is depending on us.
