Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.- Luke 4:1-4 (NIV)

A time of testing is experience by all of us, even the most devoted and determined of Christian disciples. In the text, Jesus' time of testing or preparation comes at his weakest moment. Luke writes that "he ate nothing during those days and at the end of them he was hungry". Probably at the edge of starvation and sickness. That the Son of man experiences vulnerability reminds each of us that we too are subject to times of testing and temptation.

Luke writes that Jesus is "full of the Holy Spirit" and yet Satan launches an attack upon Jesus convinced that in His weakness is an opportunity to derail God's plan for humanity's salvation. He underestimates the power and purposes of God. Jesus responds to His testing with these words, "Man shall not live on bread alone".

In your time of testing, how will you respond? Examine those areas in your life that make you vulnerable to spiritual attacks. Then devote yourself to God's plan for your life.
