In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilen during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. - Luke 3:1-2

The political climate in our country is heating up as fall elections approach. The rhetoric and campaign of those seeking higher office can be characterized as passionate, personal and even hostile. National leadership is at stake and with this leadership comes great power and influence. We should carefully consider who will best serve our country in the upcoming elections.

Today's text reads like a 'who's who' list of powerful political  and religious personalities, each with his own reputation for oppression and ruthless power.  Yet, within this list we are told that "the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness". God speaks to John in the wilderness and in doing so reminds us that His power is greater than any power. That even in times of uncertainty and unrest, God can and will come to us with His word of repentance and redemption. God still speaks.
