As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: -1 Peter 2:2

I can recall moments during my childhood when I earnestly wanted to grow up. I wanted to be taller, stronger and more independent. It was often a result of either personal ambition and goal setting or competitiveness among my peers. Most of my peers were focused on growing up too. We would measure how tall we were or how much we weighed or how many push-ups we could perform. We were focused on growing up. Those were childhood years.

It is interesting how when I was young I wanted to grow up and now that I'm more mature, I'd prefer  for time to slow down a bit or better yet, to return to those younger years. But growth is a part of the human experience and can be measured in several dimensions, Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually to name a few.

Perhaps as Christians we should give more consideration to our individual spiritual growth. What does it take to grow up and become spiritually mature? Why is it that some Christians do not grow as they should? How can we grow as Christians?

First we must learn to expect spiritual growth in ourselves and others in the faith. Babies are immature physically and mentally, but we expect them to develop. If they don't there is a problem. When a person is "born again" as a child of God, he or she is spiritually immature. He or she should develop the qualities  prescribed in the bible that characterize maturity. Church congregations mature as individual members mature. But we will never grow unless we desire growth. Infancy involves no responsiblity. Others feed you, clothe you , change your diaper, etc.  Yet God call us to maturity, productivity and usefulness.

Secondly, we need proper nourishment in order to grow.  Just as a child cannot grow physically without food, so a Christian cannot grow without feeding on God's word. But to get nourishment, we must avail ourselves to the word of God through instruction, mediation, reading, preaching , and fellowship with other believers.

Finally, Growth can't happen without exercise and practice. If you're like me, the most difficult thing to do, is to make time for physical excercise. My doctor has already issue a warning to me that without it my health will not get better. I'd like to think that the same is true for my spiritual health. If I don't exercise spiritually. that is to put into practice love, forgiveness, faithfulness, service, worship and fellowship, then I cannot expect to grow as a Christian.

I invite you to join me in praying for the body of Christ that we all might grow up in the faith. That the fruit of the spirit might be seen in our life, our heart, our attitudes and actions. May God get the glory!
