Letting Your Light Shine

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. -Matthew 5:16 NIV

We've all been admonished to "let our light shine" at some point either through our church or family. But have you ever considered the implication and application of that phrase. In some sense letting our light shine might appeal to our carnal desire towards self advancement. We often find ourselves "doing our own thing" in the name of the Lord with an eye towards self promotion. It is an inconvient truth that "letting our light shine" should be embraced with caution and much prayer. To be clearer, our witness should not be self centered or self motivated.

The context of this verse is the Sermon on the Mount, in which Jesus is teaching on rightouseness and justice. These disciples who listen are in fact being urged to become agents and advocates for justice in an unjust society. "Salt" and "light" become metaphors for the Christian witness to the world. So letting our light shine does not speak to our talents or abilitites, nor does it warrant the pursuit of fame, attention or accolades.

Letting our light shine is about living out the gospel daily in front of a watching world. It urges us to identify with Jesus both privately and publicly and in doing so we identify with the weak and powerless among us. Letting our light shine places the spotlight on Jesus and not ourselves.

To be sure, Jesus indeed endores the expectation of Christian labor. Christians are workers for the Lord. The Christian duty is to serve the Lord and we serve Him through serving others. But our prayer becomes, "Lord as I let my light shine, may You get all the glory!"

May we all be encouraged at the begining of a new year to consider how we might "let our light shine"...and how we might do this with humility and sincerity of heart.
