Following Jesus...All The Way

Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” - John 6:66-69

With filled baskets of bread and satisfied stomachs, five thousand people plus women and children have chosen to reject the teaching ministry of Jesus and embrace the traditional understandings of Mosaic law. They had come to Jesus like lost sheep looking for a shepherd, bellies empty and souls thirsty. Jesus had worked a miracle in their presence with a sacrifical offering of an unamed youngster. The blessing was so bountiful untill there were leftovers to be gathered. They gladly recieved the loaves and the fish. But when Jesus gave them His word.... they found it hard to accept.

How often we receive with open hands the benefits of God's blessings, but when that which truly transforms us is offered we instead refuse with disdain his offering of love. What we learn from the text fundamentaly is that we cannot live without Jesus. Physical, material, temporal things are simply insufficent in sustaining us for any meaningful period of time. Only a relationship with Jesus is able to truly fill us and satisfy us.

John says at verse 66, that people actually walked away from Jesus! Can you imagine after all the Lord had done for them, they chose to recieve his physical bread and reject his spiritual teaching. Maybe we can learn from Simon Peter's response, "to whom shall we go?" In other words, Peter understood that regardless of what the crowd chose to do, his choice and determination was to go all the way with Jesus.

May we all learn to place greater value on what Jesus says than what the world suggests. May each one of us experience God's bountiful blessings upon our life so as to lead us to trust Him for everything. Others may walk away...but I have decided to follow Jesus...all the way. In the words of that great hymn, "Though no one join me...still I will follow.

Follow Jesus with loyalty, consistency and faith
