Verse for the Day

“But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord my God that have cost me nothing.” So, David paid him fifty pieces of silver[a] for the threshing floor and the oxen.”

-2 Samuel 24:24 NLT

Quote for the Day

“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”

-Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Word for the Day

We arrive at Day 7 of our 7 Day Devotional. I am praying for a greater level of commitment to God. I recognize that it is impossible to follow Christ and avoid suffering and sacrifice. Yet I am motivated and sustained by God’s promise to be with me and give me victory over the enemy.

Like David in 2 Samuel 24:24, serving the Lord means giving unto the Lord the best that I have. Giving God my best means rejecting the cheap convenient offerings often associated with religion. I must give unto the Lord the things that cost me.

I will not live by the “Cheap Grace” that Bonhoeffer describes as being void of personal repentance, church discipline, personal confession, discipleship, the cross and ultimately void of Jesus Christ Himself. The grace I experience has been provided at a great cost at a place called Calvary.

I am determined to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. I will offer God my time, talent, and treasure for His glory.

Prayer for the Day

Eternal God My Father, You are my Lord and my God. I know from Your Word that a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart is a sacrifice, O God, that You will not despise. I come before you now to offer myself to you Lord God – all of me – my body, my mind, and my soul. All I have, all I am, are Yours and Yours alone.

Search me and know my heart, stretch me Lord, and expand me into the new areas of life which you have destined for me. Let Your Spirit empower me to a greater level of commitment to You. Remove any desire to quit or turn around. Help me to Hold out until my change comes. I love you and I need you, always. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen
