So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27
Exactly what does it mean to be created in the "image of God"? Certainly, it implies that the image of God is more than a physical reflection of the Divine. Humanity is distinguished from all creatures in that dominion and fellowship with God are exclusively gifted to both males and females. The concept of the "Imago Dei" communicates worth and dignity as well as stewardship and accountability to God. It pictures our spiritual and moral capacities unlike all other creatures.
But it does not suggest perfection. Humanity is far from perfect. We live in a fallen world and we demonstrate a propensity to get it wrong quite often. Like the Prophet Isaiah, who catches a glimpse of God's Glory, “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” (Isa 6:5)
We are not perfect.
So You have permission:
1. To admit you do not have all the answers.
You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. - Job 42:3
2. To become frustrated and angry with injustice and unrighteousness.
Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, in the ruin that will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? - Isaiah 10:1-3
3. To retreat and practice solitude
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. - Mark 6:30-32
4.To seek forgiveness and show forgiveness
Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation. - Luke 11:4
Most importantly, You have permission to be human, fallible, limited and oftentimes inadequate.
Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. - 2 Cor. 12:8-10
Prayer
Lord, Give us strength and courage to embrace our humanity and cling to Your amazing grace. Amen
