The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.  He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:9-14 NIV

Call and Response

The "Call and Response" dynamic engrained and enriched in African American Worship is to establish and maintain spiritual harmony, to maintain a sense of group solidarity, and cultural values within the African American Christian community. The rhythm, tempo and responsive nature of this dynamic articulates unity, oneness and agreement. It is an amazing unrehearsed moment of worship and praise.

In similar fashion, John declares that the Call of God came in the person of Jesus Christ as the True Light of the world. The Logos or Word made flesh came into the world but the world would not acknowledge or accept Him. This Heavenly discourse was met by resistance and rebellion. In fact, John declares that even those who were familiar with prophecy and law and the long awaited Messiah , still did not receive Him.

In reflection, may we open our heart and mind to the call of God in Christ Jesus during this Advent season. May we acknowledge and receive Jesus Christ as the True Light and Savior of the World. Let us not resist, or rebel or deny the person and work of Jesus Christ.

He is Emmanuel, God with us, Lord and Savior !

Prayer

Dear Jesus, Emmanuel, You are the gift of love sent from God, the Father to me and all of humanity. Your greatest commandments are to love God with all of my heart, soul, strength and mind…and to love others as myself. May this be a continual reality in my life as long as I draw breath here on earth. I ask that You would help me to comprehend the love that the Father has for You is also in Your people! In Jesus Name, Amen
