Thinking Discipleship...

When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.

Those are the words of German Christian theologian and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He calls us to consider what kind of discipleship are we promoting and practicing within Christian congregations. Bonhoeffer would call it "Cheap Grace".

Grace without cost, without price, without sacrifice, remorse, repentance or pain.  A grace nurtured by a commercialized, secularized church influenced more by the marketplace than by the Master.

In reflection, much of what passes as Discipleship is no more than cloaked consumerism in our congregations. Convenience and comfort are priorities of 21st century ministries.

Membership and Discipleship are not synonymous. We are commissioned to make disciples.

Read Luke 9:23 with fresh eyes and see how Christian Discipleship calls us to embrace the Demands of Discipleship.  Self denial and cross bearing describes what being devoted to Christ is all about. Of course  this is in grateful response to the cost paid by our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Christian Discipleship leads us into right relationship both with God and humanity. It teaches us how to serve, support, and suffer for the cause of Christ, which is the redemption of humanity.
