After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.-  Luke 5:27-28 (NIV)

The people Jesus is drawn to in the Gospels are far from the elite of society. In fact Luke's narrative communicates to us the focus of Jesus' ministry."The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised," - Luke 4:18.

We may wonder if we are eligible to be disciples of Jesus Christ. Do we measure up? Are we included in His fellowship?  In the text Jesus' invitation is a two-word command: "Follow me." Simple and direct.

Think what Levi feels like when he hears those two words tap-tapping like a door-knocker on his soul. He is being called to leave his lucrative trade as a tax collector to become almost a beggar, sustaining himself on the sometimes meager contributions made to his Rabbi. In an instant he is being called from wealth to poverty.

But I don't think the issue of poverty really enters into his decision. Only one thing matters to Levi... Jesus has sought him out and selected him on purpose. The despised Tax Collector is called by Jesus!

You have been called by God on purpose. God has plans for you. Consider your response to his invitation today. The text says, "Levi got up, left everything and followed him."
